How does a basement get moldy in a desert climate?

Because the basement doesn't live in the desert — it lives in the soil. Irrigation and snowmelt keep the ground near foundations wetter than the air above it, and concrete lets that moisture migrate through slowly. Add a finished wall or cardboard boxes stored against the concrete, and you've supplied the organic material and the concealment. The dry climate protects your patio furniture, not your wall cavities.

There's a musty smell upstairs — could it be coming from the crawl space?

Very possibly. Air in a house tends to move upward, which means the living space breathes some of whatever the crawl space or basement is producing. A musty odor on the main floor with no visible source above grade is a classic sign the problem lives below it. Should I check for moisture before finishing my basement?
